The International Canoe Race takes you on a journey to the heart of theEngland on 201km. This impressive distance makes it the longest canoe race in the world. The participants cross the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Thamesknown for its particularly violent currents. In the course of their journey, the Cetirians have about a hundred locks to cross, forcing them to carry their canoe more than 150 times.
The International Canoe Race takes place at Easter, a time of year when the weather can still be harsh. When the sun is at its zenith, the mercury only rises to 13°CThe cold water sprays that reach the competitors are therefore not the most pleasant. There is also a major obstacle: part of the race takes place at night ! Indeed, 90% dropouts occur when darkness sets in. By this time, the competitors have already covered an average of 100 kilometres. These different characteristics make the International Canoe Race both a technical and mental race.
The difficulties of the race are such that the British military are taking on the challenge. The parachute regiment, the Royal Marines, SAS and the Special Forces have brilliantly taken up this challenge : from 1953 to 1970 the races were won only by military men!
An atypical origin : in 1948, Roy Cook was quietly installed in a pub on the Kennet and Avon Canal. He then came up with the idea of linking Devizes and Westminster, but he did not succeed in completing the route. Following his attempt, a group of scouts hears about Cook's challenge and decides to take it up in turn. The press is interested in these young people and follows their exploit. It took them 89 hours and 50 minutes to connect Devize to the British Parliament.
